How to Change the World With Corporate UX

You’re probably thinking that I’m exaggerating by saying that corporate UX can change the world, but in the words of comedian Kevin Hart, let me explain.

User Experience (UX) is the science of who, what, when, where, why, and how users interact with products in their daily lives. We’re talking about your experience when you visit a website, use an app on your smartphone, or search for a streaming movie online.

User Experience (UX) is the science of who, what, when, where, why, and how users interact with products in their daily lives.

UX is about humans. It’s about making the devices and products that we interact with feel like an extension of ourselves, where everything can work easily and beautifully without us even thinking about it. These products can change our lives for the better by enabling us to do things we couldn’t do before—while feeling natural enough for us to barely notice.

But don’t be fooled into thinking that UX is only earth-shattering in startup environments. Some think working in corporate UX has too much red tape, complexity, and moves extremely slowly. Most importantly, they think there’s no room for career advancement. Well, I’m here to tell you how you can hone your skills by working in UX at corporations such as Sabre.

Big Industry Impact

Sabre has a large scale on products. This means that every solution we create improves the $7 billion travel industry. For example, when we create fuel efficiency solutions for airlines, it saves them millions of dollars and helps improve the environment as well. Working on creating solutions that will solve the problems that travel industry players like airlines, hotels, agencies, and travelers are facing creates a large opportunity to create an industry footprint while contributing to the global travel ecosystem.

Big Customer Base

Our customers are big brands like Virgin Australia, Fontainebleau, and Wyndham Hotel Group. When you work at a company like Sabre, your work touches a lot of people. It’s not just about making something pretty; it’s about creative problem solving. It just so happens that creative problem solving at Sabre equates to more than 2 billion API requests a day.

Big Names

One of the attractions at Sabre is our unique usability labs. Former employee, Janice James, birthed the idea behind these labs in the ’90s. James is also the founder of the organization for usability professionals worldwide, UXPA. Another UX pioneer, Brian Sullivan, is a current employee on the usability team at Sabre. If you regularly mingle with UX pros in the Dallas community, you may recognize his name as the co-founder of Big Design. Big Design is a conference where nearly 1,000 people from 27 U.S. states and six countries converge every year to network, learn, and share ideas with the brightest minds in the local Dallas design scene. Sullivan is also the author of Design Studio Method, a book that guides UX pros on how to combine the creative and evaluative side of a solution.

Big Career Development

When you apply your UX expertise in a corporate setting, you get to see long-range plans realized. You can influence what you’re working on in a deep and long-lasting way. You have the opportunity to iterate on and revise a product over a longer period of time. There’s also diversity in the various projects you work on. This year alone, we created 25 new products and extended nearly every product line we have. What better environment to nurture your development than in this growing field?

Convinced?

To Sabre, UX is the way customers interact with and receive our products on a daily basis, and furthermore is the bread and butter of our business.

We just want to make good products—and change the world while we’re at it. See opportunities to join our team on our careers page.
